Microsoft released an unexpected video starring every Xbox One Controller ever made so far.
It started with an introduction of the 2 lead designers of Xbox: Monique Chatterjee and Carl Ledbetter. They Introduced themselves and talked about the development and evolution of the Xbox One Controller. Then they went on to show them all to us!
Family Controllers
This is where it all startet. The Family Controllers were the first Xbox One Controllers. Some of you might remember that you could get the Day One Controlleralso when pre-ordering your Xbox. So technically that one would be the first to hold in hands at least.
Carl said "I've brought something today that we are not supposed to talk about" Suddenly we were looking at something very special! One of the first Xbox One Prototype controllers! This Prototype model has the "Razzle Dazzle" pattern based on the World War Battleships. The color was chosen because it catches the eye but at the same time it is impossible to copy the exact shape of the pattern.
Monique then showed theI Made This Controller. A cool soft controller: "It's unfortunate that this controller was never released in shops, the reason was that the soft-rubber feeling did not pass the durability tests. Therefore it was scrapped."
In short, these are controllers that where only released in a bundle. The Purple Controller they showed is called "Gangster Purple" and was available in the very popular Fortnite Bundle.
Next they talked about the very first special edition controller they released, the Lunar White controller. This was also the first controller that had grip on the back. The Standard Blue and the Red controller where the most basic colors. However, at the time still very vibrant choices.
No worries, we will not post every design that is possible here :) There are millions of possibilities of creating this controller via the Design Lab. The idea was to make the gamer a designer as well and to this day this has proven to be a great selling point.
Consolevariations Fact: They did not mention that they had special editions of the Design lab created. Like the Gamescom Controllerand the E3 controller!
The camouflage pattern is called theM90. The first controller they made was the Army Green or the "Armed Forces" . Since then we have seen 5 different revamps of this military style controller. Funny little detail is the orange sync button: This was based on the old army jackets that where orange on the inside.
These were inspired by nature based environments like oceans and sunsets. The first controller was theCopper Controller followed by the blue one. Monique even showed us a prototype Blue Shadow controller! It's simply amazing.
Only 3 Army Tech controllers saw the light of day, These controllers have a special grip on top and bottom, as well as "army codes" from the military handbook written on the front. The icon refers to the phrase "Seek and Destroy". The controllers grips on top where actually laser cut, also.
Personally our favorite series. ThePhantom White controller did not only get a fancy white/clear color but a lot was going on in the inside as well!
Phantom Series.PNG902.38 KB They explained that even the parts and wires inside where made white, including some springs. This was also done for the Phantom Blackcontroller. They purposely choose to have light-grey analog sticks instead of white so the stick gets less dirty from playing.
