Wat verzamel je en wat is je doel?
I collect a bunch of stuff for Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft consoles. I mostly collect games that are a must have for the console or games that I plan on playing one day
I have a couple goals. In no particular order:
- Collect every variant of the game Terraria (NTSC-U, NTSC-J, and PAL)
- Full set of North American Xbox 360 games (including variants)
- Collect weird/uncommon consoles (ex. Amiga CD32, Atari Jaguar CD)
Wanneer ben je begonnen met verzamelen?
I started collecting old video game controllers in late 2018. It got a Super Smash Bros GameCube controller from Goodwill. Later on I got a PlayStation Move controller. At the time I didn't know that it wasn't as old as initially thought however it was really cool as I had never seen one in person before
I started collecting older handheld video game consoles on February 15th, 2019 with a DS lite from GameStop. I played a ton of Pokémon HeartGold on the thing before I eventually lost the game and the hinge cracking
I started collecting older video game consoles on April 28, 2019. I got a PlayStation 2 from the same Goodwill. It came with a copy of Dance Dance Revolution which I didn't play much of due to not having a dance pad. However I did eventually get more PlayStation 2 games such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Star Wars: Force Unleashed, and Final Fantasy X (none of which I played more than 2 hours of unfortuntely).
Hoe kwam je op het idee om video game voorwerpen te verzamelen?
In late 2018, I was at Goodwill one day and saw a Nintendo GameCube smash bros controller and bought it for like $10. It was for the Nintendo Wii U. I thought that maybe I should get a Wii U because I would always go to my friends house after school and we would play on his Wii (this would be in like 2011 to 2014). On January 10th of the new year, I asked a bunch of friends on what console I should get. Many people would say NES, N64, Original Xbox, or other more well know old consoles.
On February 15th, I went to a GameStop near me and picked up a black DS Lite for like $40 - $50 (I was 14 at the time so I had to bike a few miles do get there) I loved using it so much. I don't know why it appealed to me but it did. In the middle of March my I was heading to my soccer teammates house so that he could drive him and I to the game we had. I saw that in his garage that he had a bunch of Nintendo 64 and NES games. He let me have one of each so I grabbed Super Smash Bros 64 and Super Mario Bros. A few weeks later in April of 2019, I saw a PlayStation 2 at the same Goodwill from before and bought it because I thought it was cool that it was old. It didn't work for like a month but that is because I had no old TV's or any knowledge on what I was dealing with.
I convinced my mum to take my to a local retro game-store in downtown San Jose, California called GameShop Downstairs. I was mesmerized by the amount of amazing old video game stuff that they were selling. I remember the first time I visited there. They had everything from NES games to Xbox 360 games. My 15th birthday was coming up but I got one more old game console: the original Nintendo DS. It arrived on Saturday of July 13th, 2019. I fell in love with the shape of it. It looks so much more like a tool than a video game console but it still is my favourite looking DS model today.
The last thing that I got that kind of started my love for video game consoles was giving to me on my 15th birthday, July 22nd. It was a platinum Nintendo GameCube! It came with Spiderman 1 and Super Smash Bros. Melee!! I still look at the old images I have of this day and smile. I can easily say that this was what really got me into collecting video games/consoles.
Wat is je favoriete verzamelstuk en waarom?
It is probably my boxed Amiga CD32 as I had been searching for the console in box for almost half a decade. I got one in the UK in the summer of 2022 but when I moved back to the US it started having problems. Three years later I go to a game convention in Germany and one of the vendors has a bunch of uncommon boxed consoles and one of them was an Amiga CD32. I immediately got it after talking him down from an already good price. It works perfectly and probably in the gem of the collection
Welk verhaal of welke ervaring is je het meest bijgebleven tijdens je verzamelperiode?
I went to a game store in Portland, Oregon for the first time. It had a lot of stuff which worried me at first as usually that means that the games are priced pretty high, however that wasn't the case. While looking around something catches my eye. It is a boxed Magnavox Odyssey sitting up high next to a Magnavox Odyssey 2. I could not tell what the price was but my guess was they were asking over $1,000 as I recall having a conversation with my boss at GameShop Downstairs about one that he had gotten in recently. I took a photo of the bottom of it as it was out of view and left. When I got home, I learned that they were selling it for closer to $500. Absolutely baffled I made plans to go back the following weekend and trade my collection of PlayStation Long Box games as I had a lot. When I get back I trade my stuff in and tell the person tallying my trade that it will be going towards their Magnavox Odyssey. He told me that he wasn't sure about the price as they had had the console for years at this point. I was worried that the current price wasn't going to stick but after much thinking on their part, they went to talk to me. They told me that since the owner of the store priced it out themself, there was no mistake with the price however they were offering $550 as the console was going for double their price. I thought that was more than reasonable and agreed. The console works perfect though it's a pain to plug into any TV. I was able to tell that it was the first print as it says "Run 1" on the back of the unit. It's hard for me to figure out if this is my personal favourite over the Amiga CD32. However I can't deny that I am honoured to have such an important piece of Video Game history.
