- Console from North America Non-'High Definition Graphics' label variation released in 1991 Came with one controller (MK-1650 [later version]) There are three known outer casing revisions involving the connectors on the back.
- A rare revision includes the EXT port. The second revision eliminated the EXT port leaving a blank space in its place. The third revision (VA7 motherboard) moved the channel switch and connectors to the left of the panel, over where the EXT port once was.
- Consoles with the VA7 motherboard revision have inferior sound quality compared to all previous Sega Genesis revisions
