- Named Project Natal at the time, until launch, these specific units were made around summer 2009.
- Later designs around 2010 looked way closer to the final product.
- First revealed at E3 2009 along with some demonstrations of the products. This prototype is mainly shown paired with regular Xbox 360 models as the S was still in development at the time.
- The Xbox 360 text lies at the bottom right corner rather than the right center, and there is no Kinect text on the stand of the prototype.
- There is no LED between the sensors.
- The color of the Kinect appears less glossy.
- The eastern-most sensor is colored green when turned on, which is not present in the final Kinect.
- The sensors are larger than typical, and the other 2 are colored purple in some images of the prototype.
- The side ends of the Kinect are not cut off into a triangular look, instead being in a perfect rectangle shape. The side bumps also differ.
